About Iowa Artisans Gallery

Saturday is both the earliest the doors unlock, at ten, and at seven hours the longest they stay open. The room is a ground-floor bay of the Paul–Helen Building, steel-framed and three storeys, put up in 1910 to a design by Frank X. Freyder, who ran the Iowa City Planing & Molding Mill. Banded windows pull the eye sideways. It was named for the children of two of its developers, National Register–listed on 10 April 1986, and it stands next door to the Englert. William Kurz kept a saloon in one of its storefronts the year it was finished; the gas and electric company held the main space until the late 1970s. For anything breakable, free local delivery runs through the Downtown District to Coralville, North Liberty and Tiffin.
