Start with a name you can’t place. Iowa City’s Literary Walk recognizes 89 authors with Iowa ties; treating every one as a stop to complete is one way to turn a walk into homework.

The installation places bronze text panels along Iowa Avenue from Clinton Street to Gilbert Street. Created by Gregg LeFevre, the project connects public sidewalks with writers whose lives or work have an Iowa connection. A 2011 extension added bronze book sculptures along North Linn Street.

The University of Iowa Libraries Literary Walk map provides mapped entries for authors represented in the project, including Kurt Vonnegut, Flannery O’Connor, Ray Young Bear, and Margaret Walker. Those names can serve as starting points, whether they are already familiar or completely new.

Rather than trying to absorb the entire installation at once, choose one author you do not know. Use the library catalogue afterward to find a book, essay, or collection connected to that writer and continue from there.
