The Two-Dollar Downtown Iowa City Parking Stop

For a two-hour downtown Iowa City errand, the ramp math is simple: city-operated ramps start with a free first hour, then charge $2 per additional hour.

Iowa City’s downtown ramps provide the first hour free, then charge $2 per hour afterward. This applies to city-operated ramps including Court Street, Tower Place, Capital Street, Chauncey Swan, Harrison Street, and Dubuque Street.

There is one step that is easy to miss at some ramps. Chauncey Swan and Harrison Street require drivers to register their license plate using ParkMobile or a kiosk, even when staying during the free first hour.

Street meters and payment

Street meters follow different pricing. City parking information lists Central Business District meters at $2.25 per hour and outlying meters at $1.50 per hour. Meter enforcement runs Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., except listed city holidays.

Payment options differ by facility. Downtown meters accept credit cards, coins, and ParkMobile payments. Drivers should follow the instructions posted at the specific meter or ramp rather than applying one rule across all parking locations.

These rates apply only to Iowa City municipal parking. University garages and private parking facilities have their own rules and prices.
