Hamburg Inn No. 2

The pie shake started as thrift. Dave Panther, who bought the diner from his parents in 1979, worked out that the last crooked slice in the case could go into a milkshake. It is on the menu now as a Pieshake, $9.15 to $10.70, in four flavors. The name is older than the address. His parents, Fritz and Fran, bought Mrs. Van's Restaurant here in 1948 and made it No. 2; the first Hamburg Inn had opened on Iowa Avenue in the mid-1930s. Nate Kaeding and Ben Smart of Gold Cap Hospitality reopened the room on 5 October 2023, working from old photographs and calling Panther to get the 1980s right. The artist Jamie Boling repainted the window signage by hand. The Coffee Bean Caucus survived the work: patrons drop beans into candidate jars. Howard Dean took it in 2004, Obama in 2008.
