The rock at Devonian Fossil Gorge records a seafloor from roughly 375 million years ago, exposed through major floods in 1993 and 2008.
Located near Coralville Lake, the site is organized around numbered discovery points that help visitors identify features in the exposed rock. The USACE brochure identifies fossils including hexagonaria/horn coral, crinoids, and brachiopods.
The site is meant for observation rather than collection. Removing or damaging fossils is prohibited.
Accessibility depends on where visitors are going. The entry plaza and overlook walkway provide accessible areas, but the gorge floor itself is not wheelchair accessible.
The nearby visitor center provides additional educational resources. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May through October and available by appointment November through April.
Devonian Fossil Gorge is a Coralville Lake-area destination rather than a downtown Iowa City stop. The official USACE site provides current background and visitor information.
