Check Out a Bike or Learn Repairs at the Iowa City Bike Library

The Iowa City Bike Library separates two needs: getting access to a bicycle and learning how to work on one you already have.

Six-month bike checkout

The bike checkout program provides six-month bike checkouts. It is not a free bike lending program. A deposit is usually required, typically $100–$300 depending on the bike. When the bike is returned according to program rules, the deposit is refunded minus a $50 sustainability fee and any possible additional deductions.

Bike stock is first-come, first-served. The program does not guarantee a specific bike type or allow holds.

Work on your own bike at Rent-A-Bench

For people bringing their own bicycle, Rent-A-Bench provides workspace, tools, and guidance. The program is free with a suggested $5 donation. Participants work on their own bikes; it is not a repair-for-hire service.

Rent-A-Bench hours are Wednesday and Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Bike Library is located at 1222 S. Gilbert Court.
