Which Iowa City Buses Are Free to Ride?

Iowa City Transit and CAMBUS are free to ride. Coralville Transit charges fares, so a trip across the area can involve different payment rules.

Iowa City Transit is fare-free and open to the general public. Its overall service window runs Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. There is no Sunday service. Individual route schedules vary, so the route you need may not run during the full system-wide window.

CAMBUS, operated by the University of Iowa, is also fare-free and open to the general public. It is a separate system with its own routes and schedules, even when it serves destinations familiar to Iowa City Transit riders.

Coralville Transit follows a different rule. Adult rides cost $1, riders ages 5–18 pay $0.50, and children under five ride free. Cash riders should bring exact change because drivers do not make change.
